In the test: The new GRUNDIG ECB28 (2026) – An everyday hero for the urban jungle of Berlin?
The traditional brand GRUNDIG, known for consumer electronics, ventures once again into urban territory with the redesigned City E-Bike ECB28 for 2026. As an evolution of its predecessor, the ECB2800, it promises a balanced mix of comfort, performance, and everyday usability. But can it deliver on this promise? We put the GRUNDIG ECB28 to the test for a week in the demanding daily commute of Berlin.
First impression and ergonomics
From the first time you sit on it, it’s clear what the ECB28 is made for: the city. The frame geometry allows for an upright and comfortable riding position that remains relaxed even on longer rides and always provides a good view of the traffic situation. At 24.5 kg, it’s not lightweight but falls within the usual range for a fully equipped city e-bike. The build quality feels solid, and the integration of fenders and a sturdy luggage rack, which allows up to 25 kg of load, underscores its practical purpose.

The drive in practical testing: More than just numbers
The heart of the ECB28 is a 250W rear motor with a torque of 42 Nm. On paper, a solid figure, but how does it feel in practice? Very harmonious. The torque, combined with the 28-inch tires, is absolutely sufficient for urban environments.
- Starting behavior: In support levels 1 and 2, the power is applied smoothly and controllably—ideal for stop-and-go city traffic. Those in a hurry who start directly in a higher level will be rewarded with a noticeably stronger push.
- Climbing ability: Typical urban inclines, such as exiting an underground garage, are easily managed by the bike in levels 2 or 3 without the rider breaking a sweat.
- Noise level: The motor operates pleasantly quietly and is barely audible.
The five support levels are well balanced, with the jump from level 2 to 3 being the most noticeable and offering a significant performance boost. However, for most daily rides, the first two levels are completely sufficient and help preserve the battery. The SHIMANO 7-speed gear system perfectly complements the e-drive, working quickly, precisely, and smoothly.

Comfort and Handling on Berlin Cobblestones
Berlin is known for its sometimes rough bike paths and cobblestone sections. Here, the 50-mm suspension fork could show its strengths. It reliably filters out bumps like manhole covers and edges, ensuring a smooth ride. A good tip from our test: reduce the suspension to about 20-30 mm on smooth asphalt to minimize power loss. The saddle also proved comfortable on longer rides. A minor criticism is the placement of the bell on the grip, which might be a bit awkward to reach for riders with smaller hands.
Operation via the control unit on the handlebar is intuitive and possible without looking even while riding. The central KDS LCD display is easy to read and provides all important information. A plus is the EMC certification, which guarantees interference-free electronics operation.
Battery and Range: A Realistic Promise
GRUNDIG states a maximum range of 120 km. Our test showed: this is not an unrealistic lab value. Under real conditions (rider weight 79 kg, 15-26 °C, riding in levels 1-2), this range is absolutely achievable in urban commuting. The removable 36V 13Ah battery thus offers more than enough reserves for several days of commuting or extended weekend tours without constantly needing to recharge.
Features and Safety
Safety is a top priority with the ECB28. The hydraulic disc brakes grip powerfully and are easy to modulate in all weather conditions. The EMC-certified lighting system provides excellent visibility at night and significantly contributes to safety. The 700C*45C tires offer a successful compromise between low rolling resistance, good grip, and durability.
Conclusion
The GRUNDIG ECB28 proved to be an extremely capable and reliable companion during our one-week endurance test in Berlin. It is not a sports device but a well-thought-out and comfortable city e-bike that delivers exactly what it promises: relaxed and efficient everyday mobility.
The harmonious motor, long range, and comfortable, safe features make it the ideal choice for daily commuters, weekend travelers, and quick shopping trips. Considering the price of 1599 euros (RRP) – and especially the attractive pre-sale price of 1199 euros – the GRUNDIG ECB28 offers excellent value for money. A true everyday hero for the city.
